The Giannini refret

This guitar had very high action with a lifting bridge, delaminating fingerboard, worn frets and bad intonation. After a long and head scratching look, I realized the fret slots were located poorly and the scale was difficult to decipher explaining the intonation problem. Once I established the scale, I was able to locate and cut the new correct slot positions and did a fret job. I also glued and clamped the fingerboard complete back to the neck. Install bridge truss to flatten top. The mounting hole in the bridge existed from a previous repair that through bolted bridge to the bridge plate. Make new bone nut and adjust its position slightly closer to fret 1. Saddle was adjusted down for string height setup.

Takamine 12 string

The top of this guitar had split in two places and had detached from the rim at the lower bouts and end block. After gluing down the top and installing a new binding, the bracing was glued to the top. Sanding, buffing and a few spots of fill was all that was needed for the existing polymer finish.

The truss rod nut socket had broken and flared open causing slip when tightening and wearing a groove inside the hole under the fingerboard. The truss rod nut wouldn’t come out until a small hole in the nut slot and a small punch was used to push the flare back in so it could fit out the end of the hole. This bass also needed a tapered shim at the neck connection to correct miss-alignment.

1. Broken truss rod nut socket, hole in nut slot.

2. Polished and ready to go.

Transducer pads are glued to the underside of the top, under the bridge, with the ¼” jack mounted in the end block. This K&K pick-up had a very strong signal and exceptional natural tone. An installation tool was made because the sound hole and body was too small to fit an adult arm.

1. Pick-up ready for glue in.

2. Looking at mirror in sound hole, pads glued under bridge.
